Description
This pastel artwork portrays the mythical bird called the phoenix wreathed in flame. A fantastic creature first known to the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Phoenicians, the phoenix supposedly lived for hundreds of years and then burst into flame only to be reborn from the ashes, thus its association with immortality and renewal. In Arabic mythology the bird is depicted as a beautiful red and gold creature with a lovely song and is associated with death and rebirth of the sun. In Asian mythology, the phoenix is a symbol of virtue, grace, and prosperity.
