Description
White animals play a role in the mythology of many cultures. They are usually considered messengers of some sort, sometimes from the otherworld. The white stag that I have portrayed in my pastel work is a red deer with leucism, a condition in which skin and coat lose pigmentation but the eyes remain the usual color. White deer feature in Celtic legend as appearing when one is committing a transgression and in other fables they signal the beginning of a quest. These white creatures also symbolize rarity. I chose to use red and green hues to accent the deer to give it a bit of a feeling of the dawn sky in a verdant forest but I also think it gives the work a holiday flavor. Thank you to wetcanvas user Steve Mac for red deer reference photos.
